Yesterday a guest post I wrote for Indies Unlimited went up, about subscription models for authors. Overall it received some positive comments, and I hope it inspires indie authors to at least try a subscription model. Passive Guy picked it up for his blog, adding his more pragmatic thoughts on subscriptions for authors. Commenters there were more, shall we say, cynical about the whole thing. Which is fine. But man, there are some negative Nellies in the writing community. I’ll say again what I said over there and at Indies Unlimited: a subscription model isn’t meant to replace our Amazon income. We’ll never get the traffic Amazon does. It’s only meant to be an additional income stream.
Being an indie author means being a business person. And that means trying new things and taking risks. As new technologies evolve, so too will opportunities for authors to make money. If we have the courage to try.
